Post #14 - Notepad tricks....

Open a blank Notepad file

* Write .LOG as the first line of the file, press enter.

* Save the file and close it.

* Double-click the file to open it and notice that Notepad appends the current date and time to the end of the file and places the cursor on the line after.

* Type your notes and then save and close the file.

Each time you open the file, Notepad repeats the process, appending the time and date to the end of the file and placing the cursor below it.

Post #13 - Increase the speed of the XP......

Here is a WAY to get XP go faster :

Code:

There are quite a few services you can disable from starting
automatically.
This would be to speed up your boot time and free resources.
They are only suggestions so I suggestion you read the description
of each one when you run Services
and that you turn them off one at a time.

Some possibilities are:
Alerter
Application Management
Clipbook
Fast UserSwitching
Human Interface Devices
Indexing Service
Messenger
Net Logon
NetMeeting
QOS RSVP
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Remote Registry
Routing & Remote Access
SSDP Discovery Service
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Web Client

Cleaning the Prefetch Directory :

WindowsXP has a new feature called Prefetch. This keeps a shortcut
to recently used programs.
However it can fill up with old and obsolete programs.

To clean this periodically go to:

Star / Run / Prefetch
Press Ctrl-A to highlight all the shorcuts
Delete them

Not Displaying Logon, Logoff, Startup and Shutdown Status Messages

To turn these off:

Start Regedit
Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\policies\system

If it is not already there, create a DWORD value named
DisableStatusMessages
Give it a value of 1

Not Displaying Logon, Logoff, Startup and Shutdown Status Messages

To turn these off:

Start Regedit
Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\policies\system

If it is not already there, create a DWORD value named
DisableStatusMessages
Give it a value of 1

Clearing the Page File on Shutdown :

Click on the Start button
Go to the Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Local Security Policy
Local Policies
Click on Security Options
Right hand menu - right click on "Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory
Pagefile"
Select "Enable"
Reboot

For regedit users.....
If you want to clear the page file on each shutdown:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session
Manager\Memory Management\ClearPageFileAtShutdown
Set the value to 1

No GUI Boot :

If you don't need to see the XP boot logo,

Run MSCONFIG
Click on the BOOT.INI tab
Check the box for /NOGUIBOOT

Speeding the Startup of Some CD Burner Programs :

If you use program other than the native WindowsXP CD Burner
software,
you might be able to increase the speed that it loads.

Go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services
Double-click on IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service
For the Startup Type, select Disabled
Click on the OK button and then close the Services window
If you dont You should notice

Getting Rid of Unread Email Messages :

To remove the Unread Email message by user's login names:

Start Regedit
For a single user: Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\UnreadMail

For all users: Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\UnreadMail

Create a DWORD key called MessageExpiryDays
Give it a value of 0

Decreasing Boot Time :

Microsoft has made available a program to analyze and decrease the
time it takes to boot to WindowsXP
The program is called BootVis

Uncompress the file.
Run BOOTVIS.EXE
For a starting point, run Trace / Next Boot + Driver Delays
This will reboot your computer and provide a benchmark
After the reboot, BootVis will take a minute or two to show graphs
of your system startup.
Note how much time it takes for your system to load (click on the
red vertical line)
Then run Trace / Optimize System
Re-Run the Next Boot + Drive Delays
Note how much the time has decreased
Mine went from approximately 33 to 25 seconds.

Increasing Graphics Performance :

By default, WindowsXP turns on a lot of shadows, fades, slides etc
to menu items.
Most simply slow down their display.

To turn these off selectively:

Right click on the My Computer icon
Select Properties
Click on the Advanced tab
Under Performance, click on the Settings button
To turn them all of, select Adjust for best performance
My preference is to leave them all off except for Show shadows under
mouse pointer and Show window contents while dragging

Increasing System Performance :

If you have 512 megs or more of memory, you can increase system
performance
by having the core system kept in memory.

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session
Manager\Memory Management\DisablePagingExecutive
Set the value to be 1
Reboot the computer

Increasing File System Caching :

To increase the amount of memory Windows will locked for I/O
operations:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session
Manager\Memory Management
Edit the key IoPageLockLimit

Post #12 - Few Xp tricks...........

You've read the reviews and digested the key feature
enhancements and operational changes. Now it's time to
delve a bit deeper and uncover some of Windows XP's
secrets.

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous
versions of Windows were coy about how long they went
between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina.
Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from
the All Programs start button option, and then type
'systeminfo'. The computer will produce a lot of
useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep
these, type 'systeminfo > info.txt'. This creates a
file called info.txt you can look at later with
Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. You can delete files immediately, without having
them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start
menu, select Run... and type ' gpedit.msc'; then select
User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows
Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move
deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it.
Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many
interface and system options, but take care -- some
may stop your computer behaving as you wish.
(Professional Edition only).

3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of
the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using
a right mouse click, and enter 'rundll32.exe
user32.dll,LockWorkStation' in the location field.
Give the shortcut a name you like. That's it -- just
double click on it and your computer will be locked.
And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do
the same.

4. XP hides some system software you might want to
remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle
it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or
Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf,
search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can then
go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel,
select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be
your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP
has a number of interesting new commands. These
include 'eventcreate' and 'eventtriggers' for creating
and watching system events, 'typeperf' for monitoring
performance of various subsystems, and 'schtasks' for
handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command
name followed by /? will give a list of options --
they're all far too baroque to go into here.

6. XP has IP version 6 support -- the next generation
of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has,
so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type
'ipv6 install' into Run... (it's OK, it won't ruin
your existing network setup) and then 'ipv6 /?' at the
command line to find out more. If you don't know what
IPv6 is, don't worry and don't bother.

7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer
from the command line by using 'taskkill /pid' and the
task number, or just 'tskill' and the process number.
Find that out by typing 'tasklist', which will also
tell you a lot about what's going on in your system.

8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice
if you've got a fast machine. On slower machines, you
can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing
'regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll' at the command line. If you
change your mind later, you can put things back as
they were by typing 'regsvr32 zipfldr.dll'.

9. XP has ClearType -- Microsoft's anti-aliasing font
display technology -- but doesn't have it enabled by
default. It's well worth trying, especially if you
were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a
screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat.
To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop,
select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select
ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable
the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays.
If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login
screen as well, set the registry entry
HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control
Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend
who's using network address translation (NAT) on a
home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to
email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the
file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP
address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your
chum's real IP address -- they can find this out by
going to www.whatismyip.com -- and get them to make
sure that they've got port 3389 open on their firewall
and forwarded to the errant computer.

11. You can run a program as a different user without
logging out and back in again. Right click the icon,
select Run As... and enter the user name and password
you want to use. This only applies for that run. The
trick is particularly useful if you need to have
administrative permissions to install a program, which
many require. Note that you can have some fun by
running programs multiple times on the same system as
different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you
checking for auto updates, registering a Passport,
using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the
nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the
bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current
Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value
called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.

13. You can start up without needing to enter a user
name or password. Select Run... from the start menu
and type 'control userpasswords2', which will open the
user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the
box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To
Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically
Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and
password for the account you want to use.

14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete
temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the
browser, select Tools / Internet Options... and
Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the
box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when
browser is closed.

15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just
in case you can't see the LEDs twinkle on your network
card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop,
then select Properties. Right click on the description
for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties,
then check the Show icon in notification area when
connected box. You'll now see a tiny network icon on
the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during
network traffic.

16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to
appear, but you can speed things along by changing the
registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control
Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to
something a little snappier. Like 0.

17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows
Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then
right click on one and rename it. All the other files
will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers
in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you
can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View,
Arrange Icon By... Show In Groups.

18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art
for albums as it plays the tracks -- if it found the
picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks
from the CD. If it didn't, or if you have lots of
pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the
cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just
call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick
it up and display it.

19. Windows key + Break brings up the System
Properties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up the
desktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar
buttons.

20. The next release of Windows XP, codenamed
Longhorn, is due out late next year or early 2006 and
won't be much to write home about. The next big
release is codenamed Blackcomb and will be out in
2003/2007.

Post #7 - 56Kbos tricks.... Use this method to increase ur speed

I feel the pain that 56K users have and hope that by following this thread they can experience a faster more reliable internet connection. There are a few things that one must understand prior to tweaking their 56K connections. The first is that it is actually a 53.3K connection since that is the speed that the FCC limits you to, on top of that most dialup users actually connect in the 40,000 – 50,000K range, which is excellent by dialup standards. Being that you actually connect in the 40-50K range you need to understand that your maximum throughput is only going to be around 6 kilobytes per second.

MOST OF THESE TWEAKS WILL NOT WORK WITH AOHELL, AOHELL USERS READ HERE.

• First and most important is for you to download the latest drivers for your modem from the manufacturer’s website.

• Make sure you have a â€Å"clean” phone line, no static on your line. If you have static you will have a very low connect speed and no tweak will fix that.

• You need to download CableNut from here, it is the most comprehensive internet connection tweaking app available.
CODE
http://dslnuts.com/software.shtml

Setting your TCP/IP and AFD registry parameters for optimum performance.

Use the following settings in CableNut:

DefaultReceiveWindow = 8192
DefaultSendWindow = 4096
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 20
InitialMediumBufferCount = 48
InitialSmallBufferCount = 64
LargeBufferSize = 40960
MaxFastTransmit = 6400
MediumBufferSize = 15040
PriorityBoost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 1280
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshold = 1024
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitOnReceives = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 8760
MaxFreeTcbs = 4000
MaxHashTableSize = 8192
MaxNormLookupMemory = 1500000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 0
TcpLogLevel = 1
MaxDupAcks = 3
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfOpenRetried = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1460
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1460
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0
TcpWindowSize = 8760
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 8
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 4
DefaultTTL = 128
DisableUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 90

Other important tweaks to improve your connection.

Open your control panel and select the phone and modem properties icon – select the modems tab, under the modems tab highlight your modem and select properties

• General tab:

Set your speaker volume to your preference
Maximum port speed – 115,200

• Advanced tab:

• Extra Settings – this is where you put in initialization strings, they can help stabilize your connection. Try the following websites for init strings for your modem.

Spy.net
56K.com
West.net
ModemHelp.org

• Advanced port settings – check â€Å"use FIFO buffers” then slide both bars to the far right.
• Change default preferences:
Port Speed - 115,200
Data Protocol - Standard EC
Compression - enabled
Flow Control – hardware

• Advanced:

Data bits – 8
Parity – None
Stop Bits - 1
Modulation – Standard

Now select the Network and Dialup Connections and right click on your ISP’s icon and select properties.

• General tab:

Highlight your modem and select â€Å"configure”, set the maximum speed to 921,600 and under â€Å"hardware features” all the boxes are checked.

• Networking tab:

Uninstall all the protocols you don’t need. If this is a stand alone pc then all you need is Internet Protocol TCP/IP.

Select the settings button and make sure all the boxes are checked.

Setting your COM port speed properly:

Right click on My Computer and select properties – hardware – device manager – select your COM port – port settings tab – bits per second 128000 (you may need to set this a few times to make it stick).

Other important registry tweaks:

• Speeding up network browsing.

Open regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace

Delete the key: {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

• Faster webpage tweak by giving priority to DNS lookup.

Copy and paste the following and make it a .reg file and merge it into your regstry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\ServiceProvider]

"DnsPriority"=dword:00000001
"HostsPriority"=dword:00000001
"LocalPriority"=dword:00000001
"NetbtPriority"=dword:00000001

• Forward buffer memory tweak, this controls how much RAM TCP/IP uses for storing packet data in the router packet queue.

Copy and paste the following and make it a .reg file and merge it into your regstry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters]

"ForwardBufferMemory"=dword:00024a00
"NumForwardPackets"=dword:0000024a
"MaxForwardBufferMemory"=dword:00024a00
"MaxNumForwardPackets"=dword:0000024a

• By default Windows 2K & XP cache everything in the DNS cache service, both correct and faulty DNS lookups. To increase performance by eliminating the caching of faulty DNS lookups, copy and paste the following and make it a .reg file and merge it into your regstry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters]

"NegativeCacheTime"=dword:00000000
"NetFailureCacheTime"=dword:00000000
"NegativeSOACacheTime"=dword:00000000

Internet Explorer important settings:

Open Internet Explorer and select Tools - Internet Options - under the General tab in the Temporary Internet files section select the Settings button.

Select "Every visit to the page" and set the amount of disk space to use: to no more than 80MB. Now select the Connections tab and select LAN Settings make sure EVERYTHING there is unchecked and select OK.

Select the Privacy tab and choose Advanced check the box "Override automatic cookie handling" and for First-party Cookies - Accept, Third-party Cookies - Block and check "Always allow session cookies. Now NO MORE SPYWARE COOKIES.

Open Internet Options and under temp internet files - settings select – every visit to page.

If you have a dial up connection I HIGHLY recommend using a download manager, it will help maximize your download speed, resume downloads if you are disconnected and you can even schedule downloads for the middle of the night (it will automatically dial up and download the desired file and hang up when done) when you aren't using your pc.

Post #6 - Reboot or shut down PC quickly

Here's how you can set up a restart button on your desktop:

1. Create a shortcut (Right-click on desktop, select New > Shortcut).

2. For location, type the following:

shutdown -r -t 0

3. Click Next, enter a name for the shortcut ("Restart" is appropriate), and click Finish.

When you click your Restart shortcut, Windows XP will reboot *automagically*!

The "-r" switch tells XP to reboot. If you'd like the shortcut to shut off your PC instead, change it to "-s"; to simply log off, change it to "-l". The "-t 0" sets the timeout (in seconds), so up this value if you find the need for it. To force running applications to close, add "-f" -- be careful with this one!

For more information on Shutdown, type "shutdown" in a command prompt window (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt), or search for Shutdown in Windows XP's Help and Support Center.

Using some very simple maths and a IP-based geo-location reference table, you can find the exact physical location of you website visitors. This technique can be extended to retrieve visitor's IP address using ASP, PHP, JSP, Perl or ColdFusion

The first step is to convert the visitor's IP address to an IP Number. Then we can search the IP-Country-Region-City database using IP number to match a record that has the IP Number between Beginning IP Number and Ending IP Number. Then, we can search the free IP-to-Country Database to match a unique record that has the IP number fits between From IP Number and To IP Number.

An IP Address is generally of the form w.x.y.z

The IP Number = 16777216*w + 65536*x + 256*y + z

For example, if IP address is "202.186.13.4", then its IP Number "3401190660" is based on the Formula 1.

IP Address = 202.186.13.4 (w = 202, x = 186, y = 13 and z = 4)

IP Number = 16777216*202 + 65536*186 + 256*13 + 4
= 3388997632 + 12189696 + 3328 + 4
= 3401190660

It falls in the following range of IP number in the table because it is between the "From IP number" and the "To IP number".

"begin_num","end_num","country","name"
"3401056256","3401400319","MY","MALAYSIA"

From the IP range, the Country Name is Malaysia and Country Code is MY.

The country-level mapping database are available for free but you will have to pay for national, regional and metropolitan databases which reveal visitor details like region, city, latitude, longitude, ZIP code, ISP and domain name from IP address.

Post #4 - Increase your hard disk speed....

To speed up your hard disk speed we need to configure a special buffer in the computer's memory in order to enable it to better deal with interrupts made from the disk.

This tip is only recommended if you have 256MB RAM or higher.

Follow these steps:

1)Run SYSEDIT.EXE from the Run command.

2)Expand the system.ini file window.

3)Scroll down almost to the end of the file till you find a line called [386enh].

4)Press Enter to make one blank line, and in that line type

Irq14=4096

Note: This line IS CASE SENSITIVE!!!

Click on the File menu, then choose Save.

Close SYSEDIT and reboot your computer.

Done. Speed improvement will be noticed after the computer reboots.

Post #3 - Protecting ur email from spam......

Imagine yourself preparing an important presentation. Suddenly, the Outlook Express installed on your computer pops up a message saying 'Buy Viagra for cheap' or 'Trying to sell you a business that pays you thousands of $$ every week'. Most Internet users are familiar with such unwanted emails in their Inbox.

Lately, however, you must have noticed an increase in this kind of 'junk mail' to your your email address, or on your favourite newsgroup. These junk mails, also known as spam, are flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force it on people who would otherwise choose not to receive it.

Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products like get-rich-quick schemes. Spam costs the sender very little -- most of the cost is paid for by the recipient or the carriers, rather than by the sender. Email spam targets individual users with direct mail messages. Email spam lists are often created by scanning Usenet postings, stealing Internet mailing lists, or searching the Web for addresses.

Here are some tips and tricks to help you control the amount of spam you receive.

How to eliminate spam:

1) Try not to display your email address in public:

This includes newsgroup postings, chat rooms, Websites and online services membership directories. You may want to opt out of member directories for your online services -- spammers use them to harvest addresses. Also, disguise your email address when you post it to a newsgroup, chat room, bulletin board, or other public web pages. For example, use ankurjain_del AT rediffmail DOT com. This way, a person can interpret your address, but the automated programmes spammers use often cannot.

2) Check the privacy policy when you submit your address to a Website:

See if it allows the company to sell your address. You may want to opt out of this provision, if possible, or not submit your address at all to Websites that won't protect it. Also, look for all the check boxes that have been checked by default while you fill and submit any form.

3) Use two email addresses:

Try to use two email addresses -- one for personal messages and one for newsgroups and chat rooms. You also might consider using a disposable email address service -- this can be a separate email address that forwards mails to your permanent account. If one of the disposable addresses begins to receive spam, you can shut it off without affecting your permanent address.

4) Use a unique email address:

Your choice of email addresses may affect the amount of spam you receive. Spammers use 'dictionary attacks' to sort through possible name combinations at large ISPs or email services, hoping to find a valid address. Thus, a common name such as ankurjain may get more spam than a more unique name like a11nkur2006jain. Of course, there is a downside -- it's more difficult to remember an unusual email address.

5) Use an email filter:

Check your email account to see if it provides a tool to filter out potential spam or a way to channel spam into a bulk email folder. You might want to consider these options when you're choosing your Internet Service Provider. Do your part by keeping your junk email filter up-to-date.

6) Never hit the 'REMOVE' button:

Most spam mail you receive contains a line that says 'Reply with subject line as UNSUBSCRIBE to remove your email address from our mailing list'. When, in fact, you reply to unsubscribe, what happens is that you simply verify you have a valid email address. As a result, you get even more spam instead of getting removed from the list.

Some spam relies on generators that try variations of email addresses at certain domains. If you click a link within an email message or reply to a certain address, you are only confirming your email address is valid. Unwanted messages that offer an 'unsubscribe' option are particularly tempting, but this is often just a method for collecting valid addresses that are then sent other spam.

Take, for example, the :
URL: http://grz67. com/track/ rd/3964715/ 5751/23643/ 1934. This URL contains a tracking ID will be mapped to your email ID in the site's database. The spammers would be sending you email with this URL behind the link. Whenever the user accesses this URL, the spammer can be sure the email address associated with this tracking ID is a valid one.

Many people have documented the fact that not only do 'Remove' lists not work, they verify to the spammer that your e-mail address is good. The spammer then puts it on a premium CD and sell it to the next spammer for even more money.

7) Be responsible and considerate as a user:

We ourselves promote spam in some way or the other. Some people consider email forwards a type of spam, so be selective with the messages you redistribute. Don't forward every message to everyone in your address book. If someone asks that you not forward messages to him or her, respect their request.

 8) Keep your antivirus programs updated:

Spam is a cat-and-mouse game, with spammers working relentlessly to outwit the filters. There have been some viruses reported, which help in spamming by sending a pre-set mail to all your Outlook contacts using your email address. When the recipients open their mail, their system also gets infected and mails are sent from their system to all the contacts in their address books. So, by keeping your antivirus programme updated, you can detect these viruses, stop their entry into your computer and prevent spamming from your mailbox.

Post #1 : Stop spammers

Here are 16 of the most common ways spammers get email addresses:

1. From your website(s). It is foolish to have your email address 'in plain site' on your websites, because harvesting them is one of the biggest ways that spammers get huge lists of email addresses to spam.

Action: If you own one or more websites, remove ALL the clickable links to your email addresses. Use forms, replace some of the characters (for example, use 'info at domainname.com' instead of 'info@domainname.com'), or use a graphic with the email address.

2. From mailing lists that you're on. Be wary if either the list of email addresses is readily available to members (so all a spammer has to do is become a member), or if the list owner rents or sells the subscriber list to others.

Action: Use one or more separate email addresses when you subscribe to mailing lists (including newsletters). Make sure any mailing list you join has a privacy policy you're comfortable with.

3. From newsgroup postings. If you participate on newsgroups, your email address is an easy target for spammers who lurk there.

Action: Always use a 'throw-away' email address that you don't use for anything else when you post to newsgroups (for example, a hotmail or yahoo email account).

4. From contest entries. This is a big one. If you enter a contest, you can expect to receive a ton of spam.

Action: When filling out contest entries, other forms for information, or to sign up for newsletters, pay attention to whether or not you have the option of receiving 'other' email from that service provider, host or company. Often the box that gives you the option is automatically 'checked.' If you don't 'uncheck' it, you're in for a lot of spam! Also, use a throw-away email address so you can throw it away when you start to receive spam.

5. From registering for free software, MP3s, downloads, etc. Again, many of the sites that offer these freebies are doing it mainly to get your email address, which they will then either spam themselves or they will sell the list to others.

Action: Always use a throw-away email address when registering for freebies.

6. From comments in blogs. One of the newest ways for spammers to get your email address is through blogs, since many blogs let anyone participate and leave comments.

Action: Always use a throw-away email address for blog postings that display your email so you can stop using it when you start to receive spam.

7. From spyware and other viruses and trojans. Having your email address in other people's address books can make you vulnerable. spammers have ways to harvest address books and capture private email addresses.

Action: This is a difficult one to combat since you do want friends, family, clients, business associates, etc. to have your email address. Our best advice here is to use more than one email address. That way, if one starts getting a lot of spam, you'll only have to change it with a more limited number of people.

8. From special software that looks for email addresses. spammers run special software that tests for common names and dictionary words to find email addresses on registered domain names.

Action: This is another difficult one to avoid since it does happen. Using unusual email addresses (not common names or simple dictionary words) helps a bit.

9. From IRC, instant messengers and other 'chat' programs. Some spammers have Unix-based software running in the background that can glean email addresses. Messaging and chatting are often the first things newcomers to the Internet do, so spammers get instant access to new email addresses this way!

Action: Recognize that spammers and scammers frequent chat and other IM forums, and protect your email address as we've described above.

10. From online 'people finder' pages or 'white pages.' Sometimes spammers can harvest thousands of email addresses from these sources.

Action: Never list your email address in any of these sources (or, at the very least, use a throw-away email address), and remove your email address from any such listing you find.

11. From conference proceedings, professional directories, or other printed materials. Even though spammers have to physically type all these email addresses into a system in order to use them, if they acquire a large enough list, it's worth it to them.

Action: Don't add your info, or opt out of, any member directories that make you include your email address. If your workplace address is in directories, ask your webmaster or employer to disguise it in some way for you. Don't provide your email address to any online or offline sources, or at a minimum, use a throw-away email address.

12. From online 'profile' pages. Many Internet 'communities' have profile pages where users or members can tell a bit more about themselves to others in the community. Spammers have software programmed just to spider these pages -- again, mainly because newcomers often place their profiles online.

Action: Again, don't post your email address (and be very careful what other info you provide as well). If you feel you must provide your email, use a throw-away email address.

13. From web browsers such as Netscape or Explorer. Some website owners have various tricks and options to 'capture' their visitors' email addresses.

Action: Think carefully about putting your main email address in your browser. Read the dialog boxes and click 'no' when asked whether or not you want to subscribe to something automatically (unless, of course, you do want to receive it).

14. From 'chain letters,' hoax letters or 'petitions.' Spammers will sometimes set up emails that ask you to add your name and email address (sometimes on behalf of a 'cause,' which makes you want to sign up), only to use them for spamming you.

Action: Avoid all of these. Don't add your name and email address.

15. From signing guestbooks online: This one doesn't seem like it would lead to spam, but think about it... many of these guestbooks are public.

Action: Don't sign public guestbooks.

16. From purchased lists. We already mentioned this, but it's worth mentioning again. If your email has been harvested using any of the other methods above, it could also find its way onto a list that's for sale -- and spammers are lining up to buy them.

Following the suggestions above will certainly help cut down spam. In addition, here are three more tips:

1. Don't EVER reply to spam. Remember, "if it's spam, it's a scam."

2. If you are sending email to a number of people -- for example, to a lot of friends or to newsletter subscribers -- learn how to use the 'bcc' option in your email program so spammers don't have access to all the names you email. Even if none of the people you email is a spammer, the email may get forwarded many times, and all those email addresses may wind up in the wrong hands.

3. Learn how to use email filtering options. These certainly won't stop spam, but they will help, and it will be easier to manage your email. By listing keywords that you're finding in spam emails, you'll isolate further emails either by subject or sender, and they can be sent to your 'trash' without having to see them.
